“Rehechos”

karaboushI have always been fascinated by rejects and mistakes:  what happens by accident and what we tend to discard often seems at least as interesting as what we preconceive and conserve.  “Rehechos”, which in Spanish means “Reworkings”, refers to a series of collages created from fragments of old canvases, sketches and colour tests combined with scraps of material and paper found in my studio.   By sewing and gluing these fragments together, often layer upon layer I looked for connections, rhythms and new forms.   I began this way of working during the hot summer of 2011 whilst I listened to the news of the unfolding Arab Spring.  The names of the paintings (Karaboush, Andarna) have been formed from a combination of fragments of Arab names and places in the Middle East.
